There’s no other way to describe it: New York is the cultural, style and financial capital of the world. The city exudes an amazing aura and has a comforting, yet invigorating charm that makes many people feel as though they’ve been there before (although this is perhaps because many visitors have experienced New York via the countless films and TV shows that have been shot there).

The city boasts some of the best cultural attractions in the world, and while some museum and gallery offerings might not have the history of their European counterparts, New York museums and galleries are known for their fresh and eclectic collections. Let’s look at the best of the best…

The Guggenheim

Not all chains have to be tasteless, as the various Guggenheim Museums around the world have shown. Perhaps their Las Vegas museum (which was open from 2001 to 2008) might have challenged this view, if only for its setting, rather than its content. The New York Guggenheim (or the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, to use its full title) showcases a vast array of modern art, all housed in an amazing Frank Lloyd Wright designed building, the spiral design of which has led the building to be considered art in its own right. The New York Guggenheim possesses a playful charm and direction that is lacking in some of its international counterparts, particularly the rather austere Deutsche Guggenheim, located on the ground floor of a Berlin bank.

The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (or The Met) takes a more classical approach, displaying art from Ancient Egypt, all the way through to European masters and contemporary American art. Located just to the east of Central Park, there’s always just a small percentage of the museums more than two million works of art on display, as there’s simply not the space to display everything, which is a common problem at larger museums and galleries.

Mnuchin Gallery

Located in a chic former townhouse, the Mnuchin Galley is dedicated to the best of contemporary American and international art. The gallery has exhibited Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Jasper Johns and Francis Bacon, as well as other less known practitioners. The Mnuchin offers artists whose work is often polarizing, but always fascinating, making it an ideal stopping point to take in some art that will fuel conversation (and perhaps arguments).

The Mnuchin Gallery is located at 45 East 78th Street, New York

While these galleries typically exhibit the masters in their fields, there are no shortages of other galleries to visit in New York. Emerging artists have long exhibited in out of the way galleries in Soho, and West Chelsea is also a center for new artists. If you get tired of the larger galleries and museums, perhaps a visit to one of these low-key galleries might be in order, especially since most of the art is actually for sale. Who knows- maybe one day your purchase will be sought out by the Guggenheim.
